Abstract
Lately, there have been construction works for roadway, railway, subway and more on the rise in Korea due to ever-increasing traffic volume under the influence of ongoing economic growth and urbanization. Moreover, as more than 65% of our national land consist of mountainous regions. That is why tunnels must be developed. However, those tunnels provide us with convenience alone through limited elements, and there are few studies on possibly ways to relieve users' discomforts and psychological anxiety. This study conducted researches in its developmental direction by utilizing environmental color in order to form the comfortable and familiar environment in tunnel based on the position of improvement in quality of culture and life through integrating public environment and color. First of all, after specifically examining overview, visual- perception theory, and environmental color through literature survey, it selected Uiwang and Gwacheon tunnels that are mountainous tunnels out of the classification according to the location of tunnel in the specific range. In order to improve visual environment in the tunnel that was selected in the following range, the space was divided into entrance section, driving section, exit section. The driving section was presented ‘two-step separation application method in color’ and ‘section separation application method in color.’ And, the entrance and exit sections were presented ‘a specialization plan of including local color.' By means of these approaches, this study examined possible ways to produce effects of better quality: The coloration of side wall and ceiling in tunnel was changed from achromatic colors to chromatic ones. And the psychological effects of changed coloration were positively employed to change users' negative emotions(e.g. feeling of isolation, pressure, discomfort, anxiety, etc) into positive ones(e.g. feeling of comfort, stability, friendliness, etc). And flat and stereotyped exterior appearances were revitalized with visual differentiation which involved changing entry and exit based on local traits.
