양공주의 자기인식 양상과 삶의 방식에 대한 고찰 - 해방기와 1950년대 소설을 중심으로 -

Abstract

이 글은 해방기와 1950년대 소설을 대상으로 그 동안 ‘타자의 시선’에 의해 보여지고 규정되는 존재에서 벗어나 자기 삶의 주체로서 양공주 스스로 자기를 바라보는 ‘자기인식’의 양상과 그에 따른 삶의 향방 및 존립방식을 살펴보았다. 양공주로서 자책 없이 적극적이고 긍정적으로 생활하는 모습은 ｢해결책｣의 ‘김미라’ 와 ｢매체｣의 ‘한천옥’의 삶에서 마주할 수 있다. 이들은 전통적인 가치관과 가부장적인한국 남성들에게 강한 거부감을 드러내며, 양공주의 삶에 만족하고 자신감 있게 살아간다. 이들 자신감의 원천은 타자의 시선과 평가에 얽매이지 않는 주체적인 자기인식에서 연유한다. ｢오발탄｣의 ‘명숙’, ｢해방촌 가는 길｣의 ‘기애’는 ‘양갈보’라는 신분을 떳떳해하지 않는다. 그러나 결코 좌절하지 않고 성실하게 삶을 꾸려간다. 이들의 공통적인 특징은양공주라는 현실을 수용하되 자책이나 죄책감에 빠지지 않는다는 것, 그리고 사회의비난과 냉담한 시선과는 별개로 삶의 의지를 갖고 성실하게 살아간다는 사실에 있다. 이들의 삶의 의지와 성실함은 생활인으로서의 정체성과 자기인식에 기반을 두고 있다. 이와 달리 양공주로서 자격지심과 죄책감에 빠져 삶의 의욕을 상실하거나 파멸에이르는 형태로 드러나기도 한다. ｢낙조｣의 ‘춘자’는 양공주로서 ‘더러움’과 ‘부끄러움’으로 자기를 인식함으로써 굴욕적 삶을 살게 될 앞날을 예고하고, ｢황선지대｣의 ‘영미’는자신이 처한 상황에 매몰되어 자학과 절망에 빠져 산다. 또한 󰡔끝없는 낭만󰡕에서 ‘이차래’는 국제결혼한 정식 아내임에도 불구하고 ‘양갈보’라는 과도한 자격지심과 정혼자에 대한 자책 그리고 박약한 심성으로 결국 죽음에 이르는 비극적 결말을 맞는다. 이처럼 양공주로서 자기를 어떻게 인식하는가에 따라 자기 존재의 운명과 삶의 양상이 현저하게 달라지는 모습을 확인하였다. 이들의 존립 방식은 타자의 시선과 주체의 인식 사이에서 판단과 언행을 가름하는 하나의 규준이 되기도 할 것이다. Escaping from ‘self-knowledge’ aspect and a Yangkongju's existence method of living seen and defined by others in the past but this writing investigated 'self-knowledge' aspect and their existence method of living seen by their own eyes. Attitudes actively living without blaming themselves as a Yangkongjus are found from the life of 'Kim Mi-ra’ in 「Solution」 and ‘Han Cheon-ok’ in 「Media」. They lived satisfactory and confident a Yangkongju's lives. Source of their confidence stemmed from subjective self-knowledge not being restricted others' eyes and evaluation. ‘Myeong-suk’ in 「The Aimless Bullet」, and ‘Gi-ae’ in 「The Road to Habangchon」 did not think their status were honorable. However, they were never frustrated and managed their living faithfully. Their will and faithfulness of lives were based on identity and self-knowledge as their living character. Unlike this, feeling inferiority complex or guilt as a Yangkongju, some revealed loss of desire for living or ruined them. ‘Chun-ja’ in 「Sunset」 recognized her as 'contamination' as well as 'shame' and she forecasted humiliating life and ‘Yeong-mi’ in 「Off Limits Yellows Area」 was buried in her situation and lived her life self-torture and despair. Also, even though ‘Lee Cha-rae’ in 『Endless Romance』 was a lawful wife under international marriage, she experienced a tragic end due to excessive inferiority complex caused by being regarded as a Yangkongju by many people and self-blame for his fiance in addition to her weak nature. Seen from above, it is verified that one's own fate and aspect of life become remarkably different depending on how one recognizes oneself. If awareness of others and oneself is different, their fates are clearly show where to put their final judgment, words, and actions.
