Interlanguage Syntactic Structures Fundamentally Different from L1 English

Abstract

본 논문은 L2 학습자 영어가 특정 동사 구문의 도출과정과 구조면에서 L1 영어와는 근본적으로 다르지만, 다른 자연언어와는 유사한 독립적이고 적법한 규칙 체계임을 주장한다. L2 학습자의 연산체계는 원어민 화자의 연산체계와 질적으로 다르기 때문에, L2 학습자는 이동 관련 도출에서 더 경제적이며 정보 처리 부담이 적은 도출 과정에 의존하게 된다. 이러한 현상은 특히 wh-phrase와 그와 관련된 어휘 이동 현상에서 두드러진다. 예를 들어, L2 학습자가 영어의 장거리 wh-의문문이나 전치사좌초 구조 혹은 전치사분리 구조를 도출할 때, L1 습득과정에서는 관찰되지 않는 영어에서는 비문인 wh-범위표시 구조나 영전치사 구조가 빈번히 생성된다. L2 학습자에게서 이처럼 규칙적이고 체계적으로 나타나는 비문법적인 구문은 L2 습득 과정에서 처리의 효용성과 경제성 때문에 불가피하게 생성되는 자연스럽고 불가피한 현상으로 볼 수 있다.

This paper argues that syntactic derivations and structures in L2 English are fundamentally different from those in L1 English, but similar to those in some other languages. The computational system for L2 learners may not function on a par with native speakers, particularly when moving the wh-phrase and related lexical items from their base positions to a clause-initial position. Consequently, L2 learners rely on alternative derivations that are more economical and necessitate less processing burden. When they intend to derive long-distance (LD) wh-questions such as Who do you think bought the clothes?, wh-scope marking such as *What do you think who bought the clothes? arises as a predominant alternative structure. On the other hand, when they intend to derive a pied-piping structure such as For which bus are you waiting? or a preposition stranding structure such as Which bus are you waiting for?, null-prepositional construction (NPCs) such as *Which bus are you waiting? arises a terminal structure for average L2 learners. Wh-scope marking and NPCs are ungrammatical in (L1) English, although quite viable in L2 English. However, these systematic ungrammatical L2 structures are legitimate in other natural languages, which leads us to claim that they are inevitable and in essence perfectly natural in the course of L2 acquisition due to economy reasons.
