Abstract
This paper aims to examine expressions of disagreement in Korean and English task-based conversations and to explore the effects of power and culture on the use of disagreement expressions. The data consist of 20 Korean and 20 English pairs interacting with each other while arranging a series of 15 pictures. Half of them were [teacher-student] pairs and the other half were [student-student] pairs. The results show that indeed power and culture do affect how people disagree with each other. First of all, Korean and English pairs were in fact not very different in the number of disagreement and disagreement episodes, and both groups preferred softened expressions related to negative politeness. However, Korean speakers preferred to use (negative) questions or kathta ‘seem’ whereas English speakers preferred to use declarative sentences using mitigated verbs such as think, guess, fee like, and so on. As for the effect of power on the expressions of disagreement, [T-S] pairs disagreed with each other less than [S-S] pairs, and [S-S] pairs used more direct, strengthened expressions than [T-S] pairs.
