기억과 추모의 공공인류학: 일제 강제노동 희생자 발굴과 귀환

Abstract

일본의 기억 활동가들이 홋카이도의 한 강제노동 현장에서 시작한 희생자 유골발굴은 한 국 문화인류학자와의 만남을 계기로 양국의 전문가, 대학생, 자원 활동가가 참여하는 공공 인류학적 프로젝트가 되었다. 공공인류학은 공공영역에서 중요한 문제를 인류학적으로 분 석하고 그 해결을 위해 실천적으로 모색하는 분야이다. 주로 학문영역 밖의 사회 구성원과 의 소통과 협력을 중시하며, 문화상대주의적인 입장에서 사회 공공성을 추구한다. 일제 강 제노동 문제는 미완의 탈식민적 과제이다. 1997년 ‘한일대학생공동워크숍’으로 시작된 희생 자 유골발굴 프로젝트는 이후 ‘동아시아공동워크숍’으로 발전하여 매년 여름과 겨울 워크숍 을 통해 유골발굴, 유족조사와 함께 역사현장 탐방, 상호문화이해 프로그램을 진행하였다. 2015년에는 그동안 발굴하고 수습한 115구의 희생자 유골을 고국 땅으로 모시고 오는 ‘70년 만의 귀향’을 성사시키면서 기억, 추모, 화해, 평화를 주제로 ‘평화디딤돌’이란 기억의 터전 만들기 작업을 하고 있다. 지난 20년 동안 진행된 이 실천 작업은 고고학, 체질인류학, 역사 인류학 등 관련 전문가와 다양한 사회 구성원들이 미완의 역사적 과제를 직접 보고 느끼고 사회적으로 알리는 과정이 되었다. 특히, 가해자 측과 피해자 측인 한국과 일본의 젊은이들 이 서로 협력해서 역사적 진실을 밝히고 이 문제의 해결을 위해 함께 노력하는 공동작업을 하였다. 단순히 과거를 기억하고 추모하는 일만이 아니라, 현재의 만남을 통해 다른 문화를 이해하고, 진정한 화해와 평화로운 미래를 모색하는 프로그램이 된 것이다. During the Japanese colonial period, over a million Koreans were drafted into severe forced labor throughout Japan and the South Pacific islands. Many of them were worked to death, and some were buried in the woods. From excavation to repatriation of the remains of these forced labor victims, all the work has been carried out with the efforts of volunteers and the donations of civil organizations in both countries that were devoted to finding the truth on forced labor and victimization, and establishing reconciliation and peace for the future. The repatriation of the remains to their homeland after 70 years was praised as the moment of `remembrance` and `reconciliation,` a true achievement of the civil initiatives at a time when the states in East Asia are in conflict with Japan over the portrayal of the wartime history. The excavation and repatriation projects were planned as a public anthropology program for memory and commemoration of the forced labor victims. The understanding and reconciliation of the young people from Japan and Korea, two countries which were cast in the historical roles of the assailant and the victim, yet somehow managing to overcome the opposite stances and cultural prejudices. In order to minimize the danger of further misunderstandings and clashing perspectives, the participants were trained in cultural relativism and methods of fieldwork. This project grew into an ongoing exchange program, which includes fieldwork in Korea to find the surviving families of the victims. In the past 20 years, over 1,500 participants have worked together on these projects. In the process, they learned each other`s languages, and studied and worked in each other`s countries. The workshops, as a rite of passage, changed the lives of many people, and continue today as a public anthropology program for close encounter and mutual understanding of the young generations in East Asia.
