조희룡의 ｢장오복전(張五福傳)｣에 대한 시론적 검토

Abstract

본고는 조희룡의 ｢장오복전｣을 유협과 왈짜의 특성을 비교하며 장오복과 관련된 일화들을 고찰하였고, 그의 행적 또는 형상을 바탕으로 조희룡의 작가 의식을 살펴보았다. 우선 각 일화를 분석하면서 장오복은 유협이 아니라 왈짜임을 확인하였다. 장오복은 마을의 걱정거리로 인식된 인물로 제멋대로 분풀이했을 뿐만 아니라 일반 백성이 지향하는 방식보다는 일방적으로 또는 마음대로 다툼을 중재하였고, 유협이 추구하는 신의 또는 인간적 상결과 거리가 먼 언행을 보였기 때문이다. 다음으로 조희룡은 자신이 처한 현실에 대한 울분을 해소하고자 왈짜인 장오복을 유협으로 입전하였음을 추론하였다. 즉 그는 신분 제도의 질곡으로 인해 현실 속에서 실천하고 싶었던 행동들을 장오복의 행적을 근간으로 묘사하여 심적 괴로움을 달랬다. 더불어 조희룡이 왈짜를 유협으로 입전하여 자신의 욕구를 해소할 수 있었던 것은, 왈짜를 유협으로 미화하는 것이 묵인되는 당대의 사회적 분위기 덕분에 가능하였다. 이와 같이 ｢장오복전｣은 작가 조희룡의 욕구 해소라는 측면에서 의미가 있었고, 장오복의 행적이 비판적으로 수용될 때 왈짜와 유협의 차이를 확인할 수 있는 전으로서의 가치가 있음을 입증하였다. Comparing characteristic of a chivalrous person with one of a walja, I considered anecdotes in ｢Jang O-Bok jeon｣ by Cho Hee-Ryong. And then I examined writer consciousness of Cho Hee-Ryong based on figuration of Jang O-Bok. First, analyzing anecdotes that were related to Jang O-Bok, I confirmed Jang O-Bok was not the chivalrous person but the walja. Jang O-Bok who was community concerns arbitrarily wreaked his anger upon other persons, arbitrated in a dispute or a quarrel not on way which people aimed but in unilateral or his own method. His word and deed were also so far from behavior of the chivalrous person who sought faith and humane relationship. Seond, I inferred that Cho Hee-Ryong wrote the biography of Jang O-Bok regarding the walja Jang O-Bok as the chivalrous person from the facts above. Due to ordeal of a status system Cho Hee-Ryong described behaviors that Cho Hee-Ryong wanted to practice in reality on the basis of the past of Jang O-Bok, so Cho Hee-Ryong soothed his mental distress. Because glorifying the walja as the chivalrous person was acquiesced in those days, Cho Hee-Ryong was able to solve his desire writing the biography of Jang O-Bok regarding the walja Jang O-Bok as the chivalrous person. Third, ｢Jang O-Bok jeon｣ was useful accepted critically difference between the chivalrous person and the walja.
