- Abstract
- Since Korean is an agglutinative language, one of the toughest challenges for most second language (L2) learners of Korean can be choosing correct inflectional forms of Korean verbs. This study is concerned with (a) the types of errors found in the use of the inflectional forms of Korean verbs, and (b) the learning strategies used by informal L2 learners of Korean. Our analysis was based on natural speech samples produced by international marriage migrant women from China, Vietnam, and the Philippines. In the results of the current study, it was found that consonant-endings were regularly replaced with insert-vowel-endings in the case of being combined with the stems which end in consonants. It is part of the overgeneralization that is common in interlanguage. Another example of overgeneralization was also found in their extensive use of verb-derivational suffix ‘-ha-’. These developmental errors showed that L2 learners created constructions based on their rules in their interlanguage. Thus, we might expect linguistic generality to play an important role in the acquisition of L2.
