｢이충백전(李忠伯傳)｣에 나타난 채제공의 문제의식 고찰

Abstract

본고는 채제공의 ｢이충백전｣에 나타난 이충백의 행적을 이충백과 박엽의 관계를 중심으로 고찰하고 그 결과를 객관적 등용과 충의 실현의 측면에서 살펴보았다. 이충백은 박엽을 만나기 전과 병자호란이 끝난 후에는 폭호의 기질을, 박엽을 만난 이후부터 전시에는 장수의 기상을 드러내었다. 이러한 이충백의 행적에서 채제공이 주목한 것은, 박엽에게 등용된 이충백이 전장에서 충성을 다한 대목이었다. 즉 채제공은 봉건적 질서의 혼란을 타개하기 위한 과정으로서의 관계 형성인 객관적 등용을 직시하였다. 그리고 왕도 정치를 실현할 수 있는 방안으로 객관적 등용이 가져오는 사회적 성과인 충의 실현을 보여 주고자 ｢이충백전｣을 창작하였다. 또한 하층 문인과 백성이 지향하는 가치가 반영된 여타의 유협전과 달리, 객관적 등용과 충의 실현이 가능할 수 있도록 상급자의 인간적 면모를 중시하였다. 이와 같이 채제공은 당시에 유행한 유협전을 활용하여 백성을 객관적으로 등용하여 그로 하여금 친사회적 활동을 하게 해야 한다는 상층의 예교의 목적론을 역설하였다.

Considering ｢Lee Chung-Baek Jeon(李忠伯傳)｣ by Chae Jae-Gong(蔡濟恭) with the trace of the past of Lee Chung-Baek and relationship of Lee Chung-Baek and Park Yeop(朴燁) as the central figure, I studied the aspects of the trace of the past in terms of the objective appointment and loyalty. Lee Chung-Baek behaved like a larrikin before he met Park Yeop and after the Manchu war of 1636(丙子胡亂) was over, but comported bravely like a commander while he met Park Yeop and went into the battlefield, so had both the aspect of the larrikin and the aspect of a commander. What Chae Jae-Gong who kept pro-social behavior in mind paid attention in traces of the past of Lee Chung-Baek, was the fact that Lee Chung-Baek and Park Yeop met humanly, and personality changes of Lee Chung-Baek who was achieved recognition by Park Yeop and made fealty in the battlefield. In other words to reform public ethics and to find ways to realize royal politics, Chae Jae-Gong created ｢Lee Chung-Baek Jeon｣ to show objective appointment by humane relationship and realization of loyalty as pro-social behavior. Contrary to other chivalrous persons reflected popular value, ｢Lee Chung-Baek Jeon｣ was added teleology for teaching of manners by the upper class.
