개벽사 경성표상의 정치학, 『별건곤』 1929년 9월 대경성 특집호 연구

Abstract

『별건곤』1929년 대경성 특집호는 1929년 8월~9월 조선총독부의 ‘시정 20년’의 성과 선전을 위해 개최된 조선박람회에 대한,‘개벽사’라는 식민지 민간 미디어 집단 및 부르주아 민족운동세력이 생산한 대항전시로서의 자기표상이다. 이 텍스트는 ‘표상생산 및 유통의 주체:제국’과 ‘표상의 소비자:식민지’라는 구도를 벗어난, 급진성과 다층성을 보여준다. 구체적으로 『별건곤』(1929.9) ‘대경성 특집’은, 개벽사의 부르주아 민족주의 운동론이 담지하는 엘리트주의적 주체설정, 발전론적 모더니티에 입각한 시간감각, 그리고 정서적 공동체 단위로서의 민족주의를 내용으로 하는 경성표상을 보여준다. 여기에는 조선에 관한 통계, 측량 등의 제국이 생산한 센서스적 지식을 전유, 공표함으로써 그 지식의 대상인 영토, 특산물, 문화 등이 우리 소유임을 언표하는 전환의 전략, 즉 식민지의 부르주아 민족주의가 제국의 지배자와 모더니티-근대 합리성-를 놓고 벌이는 해석과 전유의 역동성이 관철되고 있다. 또한 ‘제국의 知’로 포섭되지 않는, 당대 경성 하층민의 장기지속적 일상의 세태와 풍속을, 새로운 자기정체성, 자기표상의 영역으로 확장, 의미화하고 있다. 또한 경성 공간 분할의 측면에서, 특수촌과 마굴탐사기류는, 축적된 탐사보도기사, 그리고 식민지배 이후 근대화되는 도시 경성의 팽창에 대한 범주화와 지식화를 통한 공간분류, 소비도시 경성 및 그 이면의 도시생태에 대한 분석과 고찰 등, 개벽사 미디어가 당대 삶의 공간 경성을 바라보는 자기응시의 급진성을 보여주고 있다. 이는 부르주아 민족주의라는 당위적 이념만으로 구획되는 경성이 아니라, 분열하는 내적 모순과 다양하고 이질적으로 팽창하는 도시의 현재성에 대해 객관적으로 응시하고 적극적으로 기록하려는 의지에서 나온 종합적 통찰이라고 할 수 있을 것이다.
