This thesis addresses the flow pattern classification and flow-induced noise reduction of a gas-liquid two-phase flow by using the flow visualization and machine learning (ML). Gas-liquid two-phase flows are often observed throughout the industrial and engineering systems, and not only act imperative roles but also involve crucial problems. These roles, problems, and important parameters of two-phase flow are severely affected by flow patterns, which can be classified using ML techniques that have recently been recognized as useful tools for the flow pattern classification. Furthermore, among these problems, the refrigerant induced noise of a two-phase flow is an important issue for residential air conditioners (ACs) with respect to both thermal and acoustic comfort. Hence, this work addresses the classification of two-phase flows by using the flow visualization images and ML techniques. This thesis also focuses on the noise reduction and flow pattern visualization of the two-phase flow of refrigerant R410A near the electric expansion valve (EEV) in a multi-split air-source heat pump (ASHP) by varying the pipe layout and by applying a flow conditioner. The ML techniques and flow visualization images are applied to quantitatively identify two-phase flow patterns of refrigerant R410A. A new flow pattern map is proposed for classifying horizontal two-phase flow patterns by using flow visualization images and ML techniques, including supervised learning (SL) and a convolutional neural network (CNN). By using presented pattern map, the flow pattern can be quantitatively identified based on pattern component probabilities that were automatically estimated by the CNN. This feature of the pattern map has advantages in identifying transitional patterns that have been defined as a single pattern in previous pattern maps despite exhibiting combined features for multiple patterns. To produce a pattern map using the CNN, we visualized an air-water two-phase flow and selected images that vividly show the characteristics of the major patterns that were sufficiently distinguishable by observation. CNN was trained by applying these selected images as the answer. Pattern classification was then performed using the trained CNN, and a pattern map was created from the eight major flow pattern probabilities. It was observed that most of the patterns predicted by the CNN pattern map are in good agreement with the Coleman map results for a small horizontal pipe. Among air-conditioning systems, multi-split ASHPs have been widely used for both heating and cooling. An EEV is frequently positioned in the indoor unit (IDU), thus leading to an increase in the two-phase flow noise of the refrigerant. In this study, we experimentally investigated the two-phase flow patterns and flow-induced noise of refrigerant R410A near the EEV in an IDU during the heating cycle of a multi-split ASHP with four IDUs. The flow-induced noise and two-phase flow patterns for horizontal and vertical pipe layouts near the EEV were simultaneously measured under a transient operation condition of temperatures (24–38 °C), pressures (1.7–2.7 MPa), and mass flowrates (6.2–41.9 kg/h). Substantial noise near the EEV was generated for an intermittent flow and a churn/slug flow pattern at the EEV inlet for both horizontal and vertical pipe layouts, respectively. Unlike refrigerators and cooling ACs, a vertical pipe layout exhibits two-phase flow patterns that are advantageous for noise reduction near the EEV because of the high operating mass flux and pressure for R410A in the heating cycle of a multi-split ASHP. The two-phase flow-induced noise of the refrigerant near the EEV was strongly affected by the flow patterns at the EEV's inlet and outlet. The present study indicates that the flow patterns, which are affected by pipe layout, phase properties, and operating conditions, should be considered as one of the important factors in designing a refrigerant system of reduced noise. Moreover, the two-phase flow, particularly generated in the expansion device, is a primary cause of the refrigerant-induced noise of an air-conditioning system. The IDU of a multi-split ASHP for both heating and cooling must include an EEV; therefore, consumers have perceived the increased noise. To reduce this noise, we experimentally investigated the two-phase flow and consequent noise by applying a honeycomb and a porous metal as a flow conditioner to a vertical-layout EEV in the IDU of multi-split ASHP. Flow conditioning near the EEV with the honeycomb and porous metal made the two-phase flow steadier and more uniform, leading to reduced noise and frequency control for the three heat operation modes. The noise reduction was also verified in the transient operating modes of a real IDU.
